5 Things You Must Know If You Completely Run Out Of Heating Oil

So you have no heating or hot water in your house? Running dry of heating oil can be a massive pain at the best of times. It can happen from simply not checking your oil levels regularly enough or worst case scenario, from heating oil theft. Here are some steps we would consider in the event that this does happen.

1) Confirm you have run out of heating oil

First thing you should do is make sure that you have completely run out first by dipping your tank/checking levels. In some cases it may be that a fault with your fuel lines, boiler or your tank is to blame. Confirming that you have run out dry will ensure you get your heating up and running without any other delays.

2) Place An Order With Your Supplier

It is important that you place an order with your oil supplier as soon as possible, especially during busier times, in particular the lead up to Christmas. It is also worth mentioning that you have run dry when placing an order, by doing this we will then adjust our deliveries to ensure that you receive your order as soon as possible.

3) Re-starting Your Boiler

If you have completely run dry of oil, you may require an engineer to re-start your boiler. Most oil boilers are fitted with a safety mechanism which turns off the burner in the event that there is no oil to combust. Before this happens sludge and dirt that may be sitting at the bottom of your tank can be dragged into the fuel lines and filters. If this is the case you would be required to have an OFTEC Registered Engineer clean the lines/filters and restart your boiler.

4) MONITOR YOUR OIL

It is important to stay one step ahead by constantly monitoring your fuel levels to ensure you don’t unexpectedly run out. It may be worth purchasing a Tank Guage such as the Apollo Sonic Watchman in which you are able to monitor your oil levels from inside your house without having to dip your tank. Alternatively, if you are on our top up remote monitoring system we will automatically be notified when your percentage drops below 25% for us to automatically arrange a delivery and fill you up before you run out.

5) CONSIDER PURCHASING A 20 LITRE FUEL BOX OF HEATING OIL

Our kerosene fuel boxes are handy in the event you think you may run out as they will be able to see you by until your fuel delivery is made ensuring you don’t run out. You can pick up one of these from our main depot in Croftamie or have them delivered with your next order for future use.
