How To Connect A Gas Regulator

So you have purchased your gas bottle and regulator but you’re unsure on how to connect them up. Read our handy guide below on how to connect your gas bottle so you will be up and running in no time.

Butane & Propane

Cylinder regulators designed for propane and butane are not interchangeable as they are designed differently for different pressures. Bottle valves on propane and butane are also different for the two gases.

the regulator must match the appliance working pressure and throughput use:

High pressure regulators for equipment designed for high pressure (usually 1 bar / 15psi; 0-2 bar / 0-30 psi) propane.

Low-pressure regulators for equipment designed for low pressure, usually 28mbar (11.2in WG) butane or 37 mbar (14.8in WG) propane.

Selecting The Correct Regulator

To select the correct regulator, check your appliances catalogue or check for a data plate on the appliance stating the required throughput and inlet pressure.

How To Connect A Gas Regulator

1. Ensure your hose is the right size to fit the regulator nozzle.

2. Check the bullnose connection on the regulator for any damage before connecting.

3. Attach the hose over the nozzle and attach a jubilee clip and tighten.

4. Fit the regulator to the cylinder valve. For propane screw-on or hand tightening regulators, ensure that the mating threads are undamaged and that the connection is firmly tightened with a spanner. Clip-on propane and butane regulators should be pressed firmly onto the valve so that it locks into position.

5. Switch on the gas supply and apply a small amount of soapy water to the joints. If bubbles appear on any joints, you may need to tighten further by hand or with your spanner. The jubilee clip also may not be tight enough or the connection is not properly made, take off and tighten.

6. To use the gas, turn the valve handwheel anti-clockwise.
