The company was formed in 1964 by James Donald Bilsland (Snr), and operated just one lorry delivering tractor diesel and vaporising oil to local farmers. At this point in time the Company was a distributor for Petrofina. James Bilsland (Snr) passed away in 1985, and his only son, also James Donald Bilsland, took the reins and it is still very much a family business to this day operating in the same yard overlooking the Campsie Hills. After leaving Petrofina, James D Bilsland Ltd remained an independent distributor, before becoming one of the main distributors for Phillips Petroleum, which then went on to become Petroplus. After their demise, James D Bilsland Ltd once again became and independent distributor.
From their being just two lorries in 1985 the company has expanded and now operates a wide range of vehicles, including 2 tipper vehicles to do Bulk blown Wood Pellet deliveries and 1 for Wood Chip deliveries.
